Life finds inner city - "Leben findet Innenstadt"

The city of Bad Neustadt a.d. Saale was one of the 10 model communities in Bavaria in the model project "Leben findet Innenstadt" (2006-2008).
The project was awarded and supervised by the supreme building authority in the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior.

Within the framework of the model project, among other things, the qualification and restructuring of commercially used areas on Meininger Straße was initiated.

In 2008, the city of Bad Neustadt a.d. Saale successfully applied for inclusion in the urban development support programme Active City and District Centres, the successor programme of "Leben findet Innenstadt".

Within the framework of this programme, the Federal Government and the Free State of Bavaria support measures that are suitable for strengthening and developing the inner cities and town centres. The programme aims in particular at maintaining the diversity of use of the economy, culture, living, working and social life in the inner city.

In concrete terms, the programme has already triggered extensive investments (e.g. the redesign of the bus station Am Zent, private redevelopment measures in the city centre), in which real estate owners, tradesmen and other private actors participate financially.

The basis of the upgrading efforts is a development concept agreed between the city, property owners, tradesmen, citizens and specialist planners, which was completed for Bad Neustadt in 2010 and unanimously approved by the city council.

In 2012, the city was included in a 2nd term of the urban development support programme, which ends in 2015.

Ideas and goals

  1. In the further development of the city, the inner development will be placed before the outer development in its value.
  2. The protection and maintenance of the townscape and the building fabric are to be continued in a high quality manner within a limited time frame and with increased intensity and public relations work.
  3. The energetic renovation of the buildings is to be promoted. Priority shall be given to the redevelopment areas.
  4. The attractiveness of Bad Neustadt as a residential location for families and older people is to be increased and professionally marketed. The old town in particular is to be strengthened in its function as a living space for all generations.
  5. The attractiveness and functionality of the central supply areas in the city centre and the secondary streets Meiningerstrasse and Rederstrasse are to be strengthened.
  6. The station and its surroundings are to be upgraded in their function and design. In particular, the connection of these areas to the old town is to be improved.
  7. The Salzpforte, Falaiser-Brücke and Triamare area is to be upgraded in terms of function and design as an attractive city access. The connection to the old town is to be improved.
  8. The very good social and cultural infrastructure must be secured and further strengthened (maintenance of existing buildings).
  9. A professional marketing structure for the entire city is to be established.
  10. Tourism is to be positioned and profiled in the segments of health/exercise, nature experience, culture/shopping and seminars/conferences.
  11. Customer orientation, a tourism mentality and quality awareness are to become the basis for action in tourism, retail and services.
  12. The existing recreational and adventure areas of the green belt, the spa gardens and the old town are to be upgraded, networked and made valuable for all generations in the sense of health prevention.
  13. The development of stationary and flowing traffic is to be coordinated with the achievement of the formulated urban development goals.
