City archive

The Bad Neustadt town archive offers you extensive research possibilities on the history of the town and the region. At present, the Bildhäuser Hof, close to the market place, has around 1600 metres of storage capacity on shelves. About 1400 meters of shelf space are currently in use. In addition, there are several steel and map cabinets and a collection of photographs. The database of the City Archive currently contains more than 32,000 individual data records. 

This guarantees quick access to the archive material. External users can have stocks excavated on Wednesdays between 13.00-16.00 and view them (or by arrangement). „Ein nützlicher Link zum Lesen von Sütterlin Texten“ führt zum online Projekt „Transkribus“ der „Read Co op“. Was sich zunächst etwas seltsam anhört, ist eine sehr nützliche Hilfe unter anderem für Nutzer von Stadtarchiven. Die 1915 in eingeführte Sütterlinschrift , aber auch ähnliche Handschriften machen modernen Lesern oft Probleme. So existieren in vielen Familien noch Briefe von Vorfahren, die immer weniger gelesen werden können.

So entschloss sich eine Forschergemeinschaft von verschiedenen Universitäten Europas eine „Lesesoftware“ zu entwickeln. Seit ungefähr zwei Jahren können Leser auf dieses Hilfsmittel online kostenlos zugreifen oder sich sogar die Klient-Software auf dem Rechner installieren. In einer „lite“ Version kann man einzelne Seiten lesbar machen.

Sicherlich sind die Ergebnisse noch mit Fehlern behaftet – Nachtarbeit ist meist nötig. Aber nachdem es sich beim Projekt „Transkribus“ um künstliche Intelligenz handelt, wird durch die häufige Benutzung die Software immer besser. Anderseits gibt es aber auch rein optische Probleme (z.B. Tintenkleckse), die unüberwindliche Hürden darstellen.

So finden die Anwender ein sehr nützliches Hilfsmittel, das einen Einstieg in die verschlossen Welten der Handschrift bieten. Opas Liebesbriefe an Oma lüften ihre Geheimnisse. Für die Archivarbeit ist „Transkribus“ eine Unterstützung um die Textmengen aus früheren Jahrhunderten in die Gegenwart zu führen. One of the most productive sources for historical research is the local "Rhön- und Saalepost". It was published in the printing works of Max Josef Mayer (later Rötter) from 1862 onwards. You can access most volumes of the "Rhön- und Saalepost". The only reason for not having access to individual volumes is their state of preservation.


In addition to the regional press, the town archive stores the town council minutes from several centuries. Furthermore, you will find files from the official activities of the town hall. When inspecting these files, the interests of the protection of personality must of course be paramount. Of course, an archive also grows over the years. So we are always interested in new archives. Over the last decades there have been repeated transfers of individual documents or collections. These include the collections of Alfons M. Borst, Paul Ehrlich or the former mayor Paul Goebels.

In accordance with the changes in the law on civil status as of 1 January 2009, the files that are no longer kept by the registry office will be kept in the municipal archives. 
The following deadlines apply for the transfer of files to the City Archives (according to § 5 PStG):

  • Birth register 110 years
  • Marriage and civil partnership register 80 years
  • Register of deaths 30 years

You are welcome to commission the archives with research on questionable file holdings within the framework of family or estate research.

 

The archive offers the interested public lectures on archive and town history topics and guided tours of the archive. Please make an appointment. If the clients pursue commercial interests by organising the lectures, a fee is to be paid in accordance with the regulations on fees.
